Athletics Manitoba is seeking applications for assistant coaches for both the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games (WCSG) and the 2021 Canada Summer Games (CSG). These roles will be a three-and-a-half-year commitment that will involve preparation activities with athletes and coaches, planning meetings with the head coach as well as Athletics Manitoba staff and travel to meets leading up to and including both the WCSG in Swift Current, SK and the CSG in Niagara Region, ON. The planning meetings will begin immediately following the naming of the complete coaching staff.
The coaches selected for the WCSG and CSG will be expected to attend the Tri-Province Meet in 2019 and in 2021. Selected coaches will also be expected to be part of Athletics Manitoba’s development program by attending three to five practices a year with up-and-coming provincial team athletes. These will be event specific sessions and occur in both the indoor and outdoor season.
Alanna Boudreau had already been named as the head coach of Athletics Manitoba’s games teams for this cycle. Because Athletics Manitoba also has a full time provincial coach, the following coaching positions have already been filled:
Jumps (Alanna Boudreau)
Combined Events and Field Events (Ming Pu Wu)
At this time applications are requested for the following positions:
- Sprint/Hurdle/Relay Coach (2 positions)
- Throws Coach (1 position)
- Endurance Coach (1 position)
- Team Manager
All selected coaches and the manager will be required to complete a criminal record check if a current criminal record check is not on file with Athletics Manitoba. In addition, all team members must sign and abide by the Athletics Manitoba and the Team Manitoba Codes of Conduct.
The team manager will be involved with all meetings, events and planning but much of the manager duties (team communication, etc.) leading into games will be completed by Athletics Manitoba staff.
All coaching candidates must be actively coaching and at a minimum be certified at Athletics Canada Club Coach. Trained Performance Coach status is required for all coaches at the Canada Games. Coaches who have not achieved this level of certification must be prepared to complete it between 2018 and May 1, 2021. Funding may be available to support coaches who need additional NCCP training.
The final configuration of the coaching staff for the 2019 WCSG is not confirmed at this time. The possibility exists that not all named coaches will travel to the 2019 WCSG; however, all coaches will be part of the team for the CSG in 2021. The technical package allocations for coaches differs between the two events and the final team needs will not be determined until closer to the competition dates for WCSG. All named coaches will be involved in planning and all preparation activities for both the WCSG and the CSG including travel to preparation meets.
Please note that the coaching staff intend to engage personal coaches of targeted athletes in as many preparation activities as possible.
The deadline for applications is Monday, April 9th, 2018. Interested candidates should forward a letter of interest including an outline of coaching education and their NCCP number to Alanna Boudreau (execdirector@athleticsmanitoba.com).
