Sport Manitoba Press Release – April 27, 2020 (Winnipeg, MB) – “To keep Manitobans safe and reduce the spread of COVID-19, Sport Manitoba and the Dauphin Host Society have announced that the Manitoba Games powered by Manitoba Hydro that were set to take place from August 9–15, 2020, have been postponed and will take place next summer in Dauphin from July 11–17, 2021.”
As a result of the postponement of the Manitoba Summer Games Athletics will be making the following change to our technical package. In 2021, the age categories will remain U14 and U16; U14 (Born 2009-2008) – U16 (Born 2007-2006). Athletes born in 2005 will unfortunately, no longer be eligible for the Games.
This was not a simple decision, and we did review and consider a variety of other options, however each scenario resulted in additional challenges. We are restricted to an overall team size that is dictated by the capacity at the village, and while certain team sports may be able to make other accommodations, those simply will not work for Athletics.
In addition to working with Sport Manitoba we also consulted with our partners in Saskatchewan and Alberta. The decision to maintain the U14 and U16 age categories for 2021 is consistent with their plans as well.
While we completely understand how disappointing this this, 2005 born athletes who are interested in the U18 opportunities Athletics Manitoba puts on throughout the year are encouraged to contact Noelle Merkel at Programs@athleticsmanitoba.com.
