Back in June, we were pleased to share that we had received a Canadian Tire Jumpstart Sport Relief Fund Grant. This was funding was designed to help sport and recreation organizations build back sport and play in Canada. This support allowed us to create our new Community Development Coordinator position and hire Brooke-Lynn Boyd.
We were then able to secure additional financial support from Athletics Canada and the Sport Manitoba Bilateral funding program that allowed us to launch our community track and field program at the University of Winnipeg.
The program launched in early October and it is safe to say it has been a resounding success!
Our partnership with the Rising Stars Foundation has been integral to the success of the program. Not only have they encouraged athlete involvement but they have specifically played a role in the recruitment of coaches and program leaders.
Last week at the George Tanner Memorial Classic, a group of athletes from the program got their first chance to compete under their new official (self selected name!), the Stars Athletics Academy!
The team will be out again in full force at the Last Chance meet this weekend, and keep an eye out for new team uniforms in the new year!
You can read even more about the program in this recent Winnipeg Free Press article.
We would once again like to thank our partners for their support of this initiative.
