Officials

Officiating is a key component of athletic excellence. Officials ensure the consistent application of international rules that govern the sport of athletics. There are well over 1,000 officials supporting athletes across the country at local, provincial, regional, national and international events.

Officials are volunteers. Qualities of an official include impartiality, strong sense of self worth, sense of humour and a need to enjoy hard work under variable conditions with little opportunity for material rewards. Many volunteers became officials in order to support their children who started competing in the sport of athletics. Some had other reasons for joining the officiating team, including a simple love of the sport. Regardless of how they got involved, they found that there is a special camaraderie amongst officials, one which stuck with them long after their children completed their athletic careers.

Officials progress from beginners through to international rankings from Level I to V, National Technical Official, Area Technical Official and International Technical Official.
