As many of you are undoubtedly aware, Manitoba’s current COVID-19 general prevention orders were extended, effective 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11, and will be in place for three weeks until Feb. 1.
Link to the current Health Orders
This extension meant that there were no substantial changes to our daily training, however we were actively seeking an update on the definition of a “tournament” as it relates to Athletics (and individual sports in general).
The following definition was provided by Public Health and distributed by Sport Manitoba
“Tournaments are defined as a single or multi-day gathering of three or more sport teams, who come together outside regular league play, but does not include; a gathering where team members compete on an individual basis against members of other teams.” |
The University of Manitoba also received the same definition and after review, the following interpretation and updates can be provided.
- Events that are only involving AM athletes who usually train together are fine.
- Ultimately, we need to avoid multiple groups sharing air space who normally would not be in a room together. This, along with the updated definition of a tournament means that meets involving multiple schools will not be allowed under these orders.

January 21-22nd – WOA Winter Open – PROCEEDING (cautiously!)*

*NOTE: As this is the day after the restrictions are set to expire, we will wait and aim to find an alternative date later in Feb or March. (Information has been sent directly to registered schools).
Important notes regarding masks
The University of Manitoba is strongly encouraging that masks be worn at all times in the facility, even while training.
REMEMBER
- Clean your hands before you put your mask on, as well as before and after you take it off, and after you touch it at any time.
- Make sure it covers both your nose, mouth and chin.
- When you take off a mask, store it in a clean plastic bag, and every day either wash it if it’s a fabric mask, or dispose of a medical mask in a trash bin.
AND…
- Don’t use a:
- mask with exhalation valves or vents
- scarf, bandana, neck gaiter or face shield instead of a mask
- Don’t touch the front of your mask.
- Don’t hang your mask from your neck or ears, or place it under your chin.
- Don’t reuse a disposable mask that’s dirty, damp or damaged.
Additional reminders for athletes, coaches and clubs
Stay home if you have any symptoms, get tested as soon as possible, and if you are positive – you must inform all of your close contacts immediately.
Close contacts are the people you were around two days before the start of your symptoms, as well as 10 days after your symptoms develop. This is your period of communicability, when you were most likely to spread COVID-19 to others.
Close contacts are people who you have shared space with during your period of communicability. Specifically, these are people you were within two metres/six feet for a total of 10 minutes over a 24-hour period.
While we understand that there are long waits for test results, and waiting on confirmation can be frustrating, we ask that members stay home if you are a potential close contact of someone waiting for test results. Obviously no one wants to miss training days BUT it is better to miss a few and be safe than the alternative. We can be a bit pro-active here and keep everyone as safe as we can under the circumstances.
Also please remember to stay 6ft away from each other as much as possible. Athletes can certainly continue to train together safely but must remember to keep their distance.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
We will communicate further details regarding competitions as soon as they are available.
Stay safe and take care.
