As many of you will have seen, MHSAA recently released their Return to School Sport Plan.
Within the plan it was noted that cross country could proceed with full return to play, with modifications in place; that localized league play could proceed, however that there would be no Provincial Championships.
The Athletics Canada guidelines for Return to Sport do provide some recommendations for Cross Country. These can be found in Appendix B, starting on page 22.
Athletics Manitoba has also drafted the following additional resource for coaches/schools looking to host local events.
Cross Country Guidelines and Sanction Process
It is our understanding that many schools may not be able to participate in sport/rec activities until October.
As part of our School Membership program Athletics Manitoba is able to provide the following additional services for previous year’s Member Schools;
- Support/documentation if you require approval from your administration to run a program. (Ex: Confirmation of the Government of MB approval of Athletics Manitoba’s return to sport plan).
- Lesson plans/suggestions for physically distant workouts
- Virtual Race set up
- Event hosting guidance/support
If our traditional school events (Track Attack, Elementary relays) are unable to proceed even in a modified format, all individual athletes from member schools can still compete at the smaller AM sanctioned competitive events up to June 30th.
Please note that additional participant waivers and roster registration may be required this season. Details will be confirmed with each school upon registration.
Traditionally Athletics Manitoba has hosted the Milk Cross Country Challenge at the end of September. Due to permit restrictions by the City of Winnipeg, we will be unable to host such a large event this year.
That, combined with the other restrictions and challenges facing school programs, we will be turning this into a two day, province wide, VIRTUAL Team Challenge, October 13th and 14th. If there is enough interest and participation, Ribbons WILL still be provided to athletes and Banners to school teams. Updated details on this new event format can be found HERE
We understand this still may not be feasible for everyone but we wanted to try and provide an option for those programs able to train.
Three Cross Country Races will be held at La Barriere Park. They are being hosted by Adam Penner. Information and registration links are now posted on the Event pages. The links to those pages are on the 2020 Cross Country Schedule page.
The full Athletics Manitoba Information Package will be distributed later this week, but we wanted to provide an update specifically related to Cross Country as soon as possible.
