In February, Canadian Tire Corporation announced an additional $12 million commitment to Jumpstart’s Sport Relief Fund to help sport and recreation organizations build back sport and play in Canada.
Jumpstart conducted a State of Sport study via Ipsos which revealed the pandemic has not only impacted current access to sport and play but has real long-term effects as well. Athletics Manitoba and the communities it serves have experienced the impact of the pandemic first-hand.
We recently received confirmation that we are amongst over 500 sport and recreation organizations nationally to be provided with grant support through the latest round of Jumpstart’s Sport Relief Fund. In 2021, Jumpstart has already disbursed over $9 million in funding to more than 800 organizations across Canada through Jumpstart’s Sport Relief Fund. We are beyond grateful to receive this news and know the positive impact it will have on sport and recreation organizations, and ultimately, on kids across the country.
The COVID-19 pandemic has re-confirmed and highlighted many of the short comings of our current sport system. The lack of access to sustainable training programs and facility space is an issue for many underserved populations.
Athletics Manitoba is committed to creating new athletics opportunities, re-thinking how we have operated in the past, and building new systems that are inclusive and equitable. In order to accomplish this, we recognized that we needed to increase our capacity. By hiring a Community Development Coordinator we have taken an important step that will help us build accessible and sustainable programs.
With Jumpstart’s support, the Community Development Coordinator will be responsible for raising community awareness, and for building relationships with new and existing community partners. They will be tasked with identifying leaders within these communities, orchestrating coach education and leadership training sessions that will help build the foundation for current and future generations of athletes.
Athletics Manitoba is thrilled to be one of the many recipients of this funding and we are excited about the programs that it will allow us to develop and support over the coming months.
