The following update was shared by Athletics Canada’s HP Director Simon Nathan on Tuesday, December 15th.
Please note that Canada will not be sending a team to the 2021 NACAC Cross Country Championships in La Ceiba, Atlantida, Honduras on February 20, 2021.
The reasons for this decision, made by the National Teams Committee, are all COVID related:
- The Canadian Government travel advice remains “avoid all non-essential travel”.
- There will not be a National Cross Country Championships in 2021 due to COVID restrictions on hosting competitions.
- We often use the NACAC XC as team preparation for the WA World Cross Country Championships. Since the 2021 World Cross Country Championships have been postponed until 2022, this is no longer a factor in 2021.
- Canadians must strictly quarantine for 14 days on returning to Canada, we do not want our athletes to have to miss two weeks training leading into the important 2021 summer season.
